Frequently Asked Questions
How do you pronounce Reiki?
It is pronounced “ray-kee.”
What does the word Reiki mean?
Although the Japanese ideogram for Reiki has many subtle meanings, a good basic translation is “Universal life energy.” Rei may be interpreted as “the wisdom that comes from the highest spiritual source” and Ki as “the nonphysical energy that animates all living things.”
What is Reiki?
Reiki is spiritually guided life force energy. Although not a religion, Reiki starts us on a path of growth on all levels–a path to wholeness. There are many reasons why Reiki is not just one of the many methods of alternative healing. Perhaps the most important is that, after one’s attunement to Reiki, it is literally an automatic connection to the positive healing forces of the Cosmic. It is literally capable of performing miracles. Because it was rediscovered during the mid-1800s in Japan by Dr. Mikao Usui, Reiki is also known as The Usui Method of Natural Healing. This very ancient system of natural healing is said to have been used by Buddha Gautama.
Where does Reiki energy come from?
Reiki energy is a subtle energy. It is different than electricity or chemical energy or other kinds of physical energy. Reiki energy comes from the Higher Power, which exists on a higher dimension than the physical world we are familiar with. When viewed clairvoyantly, Reiki energy appears to come down from above and to enter the top of the practitioner’s head after which if flows through the body and out the hands. It appears to flow this way because of our perspective. However, the true source of Reiki energy is within us. This does not mean that we use our personal energy when we do Reiki, but that the energy is coming from a transcendental part of ourselves that is connected to an infinite supply of healing energy.
Is Reiki a Religion?
Although Reiki energy is spiritual in nature, Reiki is not a religion. Practitioners are not asked to change any religious or spiritual beliefs they may have. They are free to continue believing anything they choose and are encouraged to make their own decisions concerning the nature of their religious practices.
How is a Reiki treatment given to people?
In a standard treatment Reiki energy flows from the practitioners hands into the client. The client is usually lying on a massage table but treatments can also be given while the client is seated or even standing. The client remains fully clothed. The practitioner places her/his hands on or near the client’s body in a series of hand positions. These include positions around the head and shoulders, the stomach, and feet. Other, more specific positions may be used based on the clients needs. Each position is held for three to ten minutes depending on how much Reiki the client needs at each position. The whole treatment usually lasts between 45 and 90 minutes.
What does a Reiki treatment feel like?
What one experiences during a Reiki treatment varies somewhat from person to person. The energy flows wherever it is required (spiritually guided) and can normally be felt as a warm sensation or tingling in the body. Receiving Reiki is a very relaxing and soothing experience! In addition, many feel a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and surrounds them. You may feel heat, a tingling or cold under the practitioners hands. These and other feelings come from what the Reiki energy is actually doing in and around your body i.e. adding energy, removing excess energy, balancing, removing blockages etc As the Reiki energy encourages one to let go of all tension, anxiety, fear or other negative feelings a state of peace and well-being is experienced. Some drift off to sleep or report floating outside their bodies or have visions and other mystical experiences. At the end of the treatment, one feels refreshed with a more positive, balanced outlook.
What can be treated with Reiki?
Reiki has had a positive affect on all forms of illness and negative conditions. This includes minor things like head or stomach aches, bee stings, colds, flu, tension and anxiety as well as serious illness like heart disease, cancer, leukemia, etc. The side effects of regular medical treatments have also been reduced or eliminated. This includes the negative effects of chemotherapy, post operative pain and depression as well as improving the healing rate and reducing the time needed to stay in the hospital. Reiki always helps and in some cases people have experienced complete healings which have been confirmed by medical tests before and after the Reiki treatments. However, while some have experienced miracles, they cannot be guaranteed. Stress reduction with some improvement in ones physical and psychological condition are what most experience.
Does one have to stop seeing a regular doctor or psychologist in order to receive a Reiki treatment?
No. Reiki works in conjunction with regular medical or psychological treatment. If one has a medical or psychological condition, it is recommended that one see a licensed health care professional in addition to receiving Reiki treatments. Reiki energy works in harmony with all other forms of healing, including drugs, surgery, psychological care or any other method of alternative care and will improve the results.
Is it safe for pregnant woman?
Since Reiki is guided by the Higher Power, the Reiki energy will know the condition of the client or student and adjust appropriately. Reiki can only do good. Many pregnant women have received treatments with great benefit to them and their unborn child. It has also been used during childbirth. Pregnant women have also taken the Reiki training and received the Reiki attunement with beneficial results.
What about babies?
Babies love Reiki. It is very healthy for them. Do not worry about it being too intense. Reiki automatically adjusts to what the baby needs.
What about animals?
Animals love Reiki too. They seem to have a natural understanding of what Reiki is and its benefits. Once a pet has received a Reiki treatment, they will often let you know that they want more. Plants also respond well to Reiki.
What happens in a Reiki session on pets?
In Reiki, Wendy, a trained Reiki Master practitioner, moves the Reiki energy through her hands to the animal in key locations. The Reiki energy is thought to bring balance and restore health of the physical, mental and emotional body.
Since energy is not impeded by boundaries, a Reiki session can occur in-person or from a distance. As a practitioner, Wendy has been trained to deliver Reiki distantly as well. If the session takes place in-person, it can be a “hands on” or a hands-off session. Either is equally effective.
Since animals, especially those with a history of abuse or neglect, generally prefer not to be touched by strangers, hands-off and distance Reiki have been shown to be quite effective. With intention, Wendy can send Reiki to your pet regardless of where you live. With distance sessions Wendy will phone you both before and after the session. Before the session you and Wendy will define what you would like the session to accomplish for your pet.
When is Reiki a good choice for my pet?
Consider Reiki, especially when appropriate, in consultation with your pet’s veterinarian, when your pet:
- Exhibits behavioral problems
- Exhibits excessive fear
- Is facing or recovering from surgery
- Exhibits aggression
- Has a history of simple or complex trauma (abuse or neglect)
- Demonstrates difficulty in healing
- Has a negative relationship with you.
- Suffers from chronic pain or end-of-life discomfort
- Takes more medication than you desire
Why choose Reiki for my pet's behavioral problem?
In my experience, the majority of severe behavior problems with pets are rooted in fear and or frustration. It is believed that Reiki “dissolves” energetic blocks contributing to these negative states and helps to return the animal to a natural balanced state. Once the animal is calmer, rather than extremely frustrated or fearful, it’s possible that severe behavioral problems, in conjunction with a behavioral program will be more easily and quickly corrected, this calm state in your pet may also improve your relationship with your pet. Although I cannot make any specific guarantees, with less severe behavioral issues Reiki alone can lead to the resolution the pet owner is looking for.
How many Reiki sessions will my pet need?
The number of sessions of course, depends upon the severity and the complexity of the case. In many situations, 1-4 sessions are advised. Affordable packages are available.
- Animals with behavioral problems. The number of sessions depends upon the severity of the problem and how ingrained the behavior has become.
- Senior animals. Wendy’s clients report that Reiki helps their pets that suffer from arthritis and other pain management issues to be more comfortable. It is also believed that Reiki may help smooth the transition as your pet faces end-of-life.
Reiki has been shown to be effective in helping to reduce the need for medication, even in senior animals. Some dogs have on-going Reiki treatments with their owners reporting that their pets seem more comfortable which helps to increase their quality of life.
- Animals with physical conditions. It is believed that Reiki helps animals that are sickly or recovering from surgery to stay comfortable and to heal more quickly.
- Animals in stressful situations. Reiki appears to help calm the stress your pet may feel during a stay in a kennel or other stressful situations. Reiki may also be beneficial to help transition a cat, dog or horse from a shelter or rescue to your home.
Are there any side effects from a Reiki treatment?
Most of the time a person will feel relaxed and uplifted by a Reiki treatment. However, sometimes a person will have what is called a healing crisis. As a person’s vibration goes up, toxins that have been stored in the body will be released into the blood stream to be filtered by the liver and kidneys and removed from the system. When this happens, sometimes a person can get a headache or stomach ache or feel weak. If this happens, it is a good idea to drink more water, eat lighter meals and get more rest. The body is cleansing as part of the healing process so this is a good sign.
Is there such a thing as too much Reiki?
No. Reiki always works for the Highest Good and can never harm. When Reiki practitioners’ hands are touching an area that needs healing, clients may feel the Reiki energy intensifying. Sometimes this intensification may briefly make existing pain or discomfort seem greater and cause a client to perceive that the Reiki is “too much.” However, after a few minutes of Reiki, clients usually feel much less pain and discomfort than they did before treatment began. More often Reiki removes the pain or discomfort entirely.
How does distant healing work?
Distant healing is when the practitioner sends Reiki energy of a distance to the receiver. It is the practitioner’s focus and intent to send the energy to another person or pet that makes it work (a very simplified explanation). Some Reiki practitioners schedule the time when the session is to happen. Others will send the energy to be available when the receiver can or wants to receive it (based on intent again). A distant healing session is usually shorter, around 20-30 minutes. Normally Reiki energy is sent to the person or pet as such but it is also possible to send energy to specific problems or even events, past, present and future.
What do I have to do to receive distant healing?
If you are scheduling a session try to aim for a time when you can be undisturbed and can relax. If the practitioner sends the energy for “downloading” when it suits you then just accept to receive the energies when it suits you best.
You don’t have to lie down (there is always a risk of falling asleep). Sit comfortably and open your mind to receive the energies sent. It is your intent to receive the energies that will make them effective. You can use a statement like this if it helps you: “I accept any energies sent to me by xxx. I only accept energies that are suitable and safe for me at this moment. I am grateful for any help that I can receive.” Use your own words! You can naturally add information if you want to target a specific problem.
What can I expect when receiving distant healing?
Much the same as when you have a hands-on session. You may feel heat, cold or tingling. Emotions may surface, old memories etc. Whatever happens just relax and let the energies flow. The Reiki energies will go where they are most needed. They will try to balance your system and remove any blockages.
A distant healing is normally shorter than a normal session, 20-30 minutes.
Can it be used to help groups of people or even global crises?
Yes, this is one of the wonderful benefits of Reiki and is why it is such a wonderful technique for the new millennium. It allows individuals and groups to do something positive about the challenging situations we see on the news involving so many people all over the planet. Reiki can be used to reduce suffering and help people any where in the world. As more and more people send Reiki to help the world heal, we will move quickly to a world of peace and harmony.
Does insurance cover Reiki treatments?
Reiki is just starting to be recognized by insurance companies. While not many are covering Reiki treatments, some are. Check with your local insurance company for details.
Are there any scientific experiments that demonstrate Reiki works?
Yes, see the section on Reiki research.
What is lineage?
Reiki is a technique that is passed on from teacher to student over and over. If one has Reiki, than she/he will be part of a succession of teachers leading back to the founder of the system of Reiki one is practicing. In the case of Usui Reiki, the lineage would lead back to Dr. Usui.
Do Reiki Practitioners use their own energy during the Reiki session?
Supplying one’s own energy or Ki for the healing session can weaken the body’s energy reserve. Reiki practitioners channel Reiki energy instead of their own personal energy or Ki. Thus, their personal energy or Ki is protected from being depleted during the Reiki session.
